PRESIDENT COOPER RELEASES STATEMENT REGARDING PROPOSED CASINO IN ST. TAMMANY PARISH
ST. TAMMANY, LA. – St. Tammany Parish Government has received questions about the lawsuit challenging the relocation of a riverboat casino license to a specific location in Slidell.
The Parish has been named as a defendant in lawsuits alleging that the state legislation allowing the proposition to be put on the ballot is unconstitutional. The plaintiffs seek to require a vote that would allow gaming parish-wide before allowing the public to vote on whether to relocate this specific riverboat license to the site in Slidell. The Parish has asked the Louisiana Supreme Court to determine that the constitution requires that a specific location must be included on any ballot measure to consider legalizing riverboat casino gaming in a new location. The Louisiana Supreme Court has issued a stay in the legal proceedings, but will allow early voting to proceed beginning on November 27th.
St. Tammany Parish Government will continue to defend the constitutional challenge brought against the Parish Council’s resolution that called for the site-specific election.
The Parish takes no position on the outcome of the election; we are simply asking the court to allow the election to go forward.
Even if the voters of St. Tammany approve the referendum on December 11th, that vote does not authorize any other riverboat casinos to operate in St. Tammany. “The gaming proposition on the December 11th ballot solely regards one specific location in Slidell. Any statements to the contrary are purely speculation and have no factual merit,” stated President Mike Cooper.
